Oslo
15 July- last day in Oslo. Lovely sunny mild weather . Caught a tram to the Vigeland Sculpture Park which essentially is a huge park full of large sculptures made by a Norwegian sculpturer called Vigeland. They were very striking. The ones we saw were all of oversized humans in various stages of their life. It culminated in this obelisk with bodies wrapped around it. The statues all are naked and looked to be carved from granite. A place you could go back to. Then caught train to the Munch Museum. Really enjoyed his paintings and saw a very interesting introductory film about him and his works. Was slightly disappointed by small size of his collection on display given he basically created art non stop since he was very young. Immensely talented and totally obsessed with his work to the exclusion of everything else. back onto public transport- this time a bus to a marketplace for lunch ( Mathallen Vulkan). Had some sushi ( they make very good sushi) and fresh fruit. Really good. Back on another bus to hotel for rest. The public transport system is excellent- very easy and plentiful. Changed my mind about earlier smoking observation- they do smoke and even have ads for it. Not as bad as used to be the case in say France but definitely smoke outdoors in restaurants. Just starting to feel more comfortable getting around and time to go! Enjoyable and interesting city but not sure we would return.
