Visby
20 July- glorious sunny day in Visby- like a warm Spring day at home. Spent the day outside. Sat on the grass facing the Baltic Sea, followed the old city wall, climbed city wall towers, sat in their botanical gardens and read, wandered in and out of their very many ruined churches. There are some 900 ruined churches here and they are all huge. Actually not all are in ruins but a number are. It is known as the city of ruins and roses. Can see why. Lots of climbing roses as well- seemingly growing out of the asphalt. One thing we discovered is that a lot of places serve Nescafé instant coffee. Why!! Our restaurant last night was very excited to tell us they had Nescafé decaf. We both blanched. Our hotel breakfast includes... Nescafé... Had to google decent coffee places in Visby after breakfast. Managed to locate a decent cup of coffee. So strange. I thought the Swedes drank lots of coffee- they always to in those Scandi crime shows we watch. Mmm maybe we missed them spooning the instant coffee grains into their cups. The city wall and ruined churches are pretty amazing. Can see why it is an UNESCO world heritage site. Would I rush back? No. Is also pretty touristy although not as bad as say Venice but perhaps we would have been better off spending the extra day in Stockholm. Anyway we will see after our 5 days in Stockholm.
