Day 18- Lyon- another beautiful sunny day. We crossed the Rhone and went and had a look at the Opera House and Town Hall. Both stunning buildings. The Town Hall looks over the Place des Terreaux which has an amazing fountain in it with these superb horses. Apparently there was a guillotine here during the French Revolution. The fountain was made by Bartholdi. Pretty impressive. The Town Hall itself dates back to the mid- 1600's and has this huge belfry tower. The Opera House dates back to the 1750's and has had a metal dome placed over the top for a new roof. It is an interesting mixture of new and old. We went into the garden courtyard of Museum Beaux Arts. We visited some shops on the Periphery and a few churches- the churches here are amazing even for a non- religious person. We went to Eglise St Nizier ( 15th century) which as per usual had a Roman monument on it originally. Interestedly the burgers took it over at one stage and it became a granary after the French Revolution. There does seem to have been an ongoing tussle between the church and the merchants at various stages. We also went to St Bonaventure which is a medieval building and has beautiful stained glass. Apparently was originally part of a monestary - built originally in the 1300's. We have decided we like Lyon- could happily spend longer here.
